The scene where he ingeniously builds a makeshift shelter out of tall grasses on the taiga when it gets late and the wind starts howling is excellent. He described numerous species of Siberian flora and the lifestyle of native ethnic people. Arsenyev predicts the desertification of once naturally abundant ecosystems. So off he went, and lo and behold, he found one. He could no longer support himself in the woods. I am sorry to sound so cliche, but Dersu is truly one with nature, plants, animals, rocks, to the raseniev of what some would call animism. Dersu Uzala was his native guide on these trips. This unity led to his understanding of and respect for life.
Being fully aware of the handicap of being in a remote and tricky territory and of the indispensability of having an indigene in the ranks, Arseniev asks Dersu to be their guide.
