Oh no, there’s been an error
Koestler looks at the evidence for ESP, psychokinesis, telepathy, etc and suggests possible partial explanations. This chapter and the one before it which talks about the results and hypotheses arising out of ESP experiments in the lab is intended to create a rapprochement between the real world and parapsychology in the lab, even if the rapprochement is negative in the sense that the unthinkable phenomena of ESP appear somewhat less preposterous in the light of the unthinkable propositions of physics.
Fortunately, the great writer and scholar of science Arthur Koestler was fascinated by the subject and wasn’t afraid to delve into it. The post-script also contains some really silly arguments which have glaringly obvious non-paranormal explanations. The wikipedia page of this book does not do it justice. If one has an eye for coincidences that surround one and is constantly fascinated by this phenomenon, there is a good deal of anecdotal and documented stuff out there in the internet that one could indulge oneself in for hours, even days.
The radio was playing in the background. It also played a significant role in Episode 4 ” Entangled ” of Series X of Red Dwarfto explain the cause of apparent coincidences.
The Roots of Coincidence by Arthur Koestler
About a minute later, we reached the church where the concert was being held. Instead he attributes the form of coincidence to additional questions of mental empowerment. We live in a world dominated by wires, mathematics, and other hard facts such as international finance, a global spread of weapons and spreading autocracies. Refresh and try again. We have a solid knowledge of the causal connections between physical stimuli and the occurrence of a male erection as do we for the female orgasm, now whilst such causal connections occasionally fluctuate in the reliability, their causal connections are solidly understood.
Louisa Rhine concerning parapsychological phenomenon: This book is not yet featured on Listopia.
The Roots of Coincidence
Marks illustrates the fact that such odd matches do regularly occur with examples from his own experience. For example, coincodence the experiments cited by Koestler many of the participants whom showed astonishing results in early experiments later lost this claimed ability.
This can be seen throughout scientific history, the rejection of the Ptolemaic system, the adoption of Darwinian evolution and the movement away from behavioural psychology. This is a hypothesis in which I am not arguing with, yet the interpretation of the results and their supposed evidence for telepathic phenomenon are more questionable. The most arresting statement for me came on Pg.
So, all actions are as they were meant to coincjdence are to be. Account Options Sign in. Essays — The Thirteenth Tribe Janus: Mamaine Koestler’s Letters —51 Arthur Koestler: Although it was not known by Koestler at the time, the claim that neutrinos have zero mass is in fact false, the theories concerning particles of zero and negative mass are purely hypothetical, just as psitrons are.
Koestler hinges his argument on the similarities between physics, quantum physics and that of parapsychological work. Within the parapsychological framework of empirical research discussed by Koestler there exists no koestle of researchers attempting to find evidence against their theories essentially improving their scientific rigour.
Arthur Koestler in The Roots of Coincidence councidence to reconcile parapsychology with the sciences, claiming the apparent evidence for parapsychological phenomenon is scientifically reputable as he argues parapsychological phenomenon are not dissimilar to physics.
He basically says that Jung as observed a real phenomena but failed to deliver a properly scientific explanation of it, which Jung writes about confusingly.
Aug 20, Derrick Trimble rated it it was ok.
Koestler ties this concept to modern physics and Newtonian Law. Now whilst it is true that the existence of such particles were hypothesised before their existence was proven, this is no grounds for accepting or empowering the theories made by Dobbs, such as the existence of psitrons and their impact on cognition.
Koestler applies these concepts to other scientific principles like gravity and evolution. But there remains a problem even with a book as good as Koestler’s. I was reflecting on a certain politician and thinking that he was right wing. That we are all inter-connected and very much part of one, vast very empty entity, seems obvious: I was working in my kitchen the other day, and thinking about politics.
